Reading Tabu wa Taire in Kiswahili

One of the ways we model good Kiswahili pronunciation and share cultural traditions for our kindergarten students is to read stories.  This week we read Tabu wa Taire, a story about a young girl, Tabu who was lazy and liked to play far away from home.  Tabu wouldn’t listen to her parents advise to stay close to home and not talk to strangers.  One day, she ventures off into the forest and is caught by a Giant and is put inside a drum.  When the Giant played the drum all around the villages, Tabu would sing.  The Giant became quite famous playing this fancy singing drum.  One day the Giant mistakenly plays the drum in the girl’s village and her sisters recognize her voice.  Tabu was rescued and from that day forward she stayed near her home and helped with the chores.  We hope our students learned the importance of Tanzanian family values, being responsible, and the social significance of music in our cultures.
